He's not necessarily a liar of idiot, because all he has said is he's uncle is in but he's identity is still secrete, so it doesn't really risk identification. I have a friend who used to be in the SASR, but me saying that only narrows my friend's identity down to someone who has at some point joined the ADF aged anywhere between 20 and 90. That's one of tens of thousands of names, so no risk of identification.

That's just the barrier test to be able to continue onto the selection course. You have to pass both before they take you in for training. And no, you do not have to serve for x number of years prior. People have been recommended straight off basic training before. You can't 'apply' as such for the SAS anyway. You can only apply for a recommendation to go for selection. They will only allow you on if you have been recommended. Also, quite a few people who pass don't come from combat corps
